Breaking addiction is not easy; it takes courage, strength, intense determination and community support. And not surprisingly, those were the same qualities that were needed to start The Bethany House, Inc - Moore County's first halfway house for women.
It was 1985 when Julia Throneburg first envisioned a private home as a resource for women in need of continued support after completing a 28-day rehab program for alcohol and drug addiction. A home environment would help with the continued healing that is needed for women to return to their families and restore their hope. Julia herself was a recovering alcoholic who understood the importance of ongoing support. She emphatically stated: "A recovering alcoholic woman needs a cocoon-like environment. You have to be stern but caring". She preserved until she got approval from the town to open the first ever sober-living home for women in Moore County, NC.
In 1986 she and a group of concerned citizens were able to purchase a house in Moore County and elect a Board of Directors. The Bethany House was incorporated in February 1986. When the doors finally opened in 1989, the first Director/House Mother welcomed the new residents. The structured environment of house rules, regular meals, attending meetings and mutual support were key to women learning how to live without substances.
The same attention to recovery continues today at The Bethany House. Since it first opened its doors, countless women have journeyed the path to sober living and have returned to live as productive members of society.
